Some Notes On Freedom

freedom

We don’t need freedom. We already have freedom.

What we are seeking to gain or defend is liberty. Because liberty means to be liberated from something, while freedom speaks of autonomy and self-determination. We already have free will, and can do what we want, with or without consequence.

The only right the biblical God seems concerned about is your right to act in a moral fashion. Even a slave is free to act morally. If you think about it, it explains a lot about why the Bible is not a social justice tract, because it is not meant to be.

Thus, we are free to do what we want, basically. What we fight for is liberty: to live without the oppression of states, governments and political factions. Even a Chinese citizen is free to act as a Christian, but will pay the price imposed by the communist oppressors.

When we speak of freedom, we are only speaking about the ability to navigate morally, which we all have.

We can make a commitment to evil, and keep it, but we cannot keep our commitment to good. This is how we know that we are fallen.

John Rodi

But on the other hand, if the founding fathers of the United States returned, they would probably wonder at why we have recommitted to a European, hedonistic flavor of bondage again. They would not recognize us as liberated, I think.

The truth is that we only have liberty if we are free to pursue the truth, no matter where it leads.

True freedom is the ability to live out a moral life, without interference from the state.

But if you are constantly pursuing happiness, you are not free at all. This is not merely a Buddhist concept, but is the signal that you are enslaved, a prisoner of the lusts of the flesh, under order of the body. If a man is happy, it is because he knows that God is his father, and then he has been liberated from this pursuit, entirely.

Freedom to sin, or to do evil, does not define true freedom. True freedom is freedom from sin.

After the fall, Adam and Eve were exiled from the presence of God. Would you say that divorce from God and his immediate presence is freedom? Would you frame that as a good, positive thing? Of course not. But we do.

You can never be free to make good, sound, rational or moral decisions in a world of propaganda and lies. That is why we have the gospel. It cuts through all of the cultural white noise, exposing to us the soul of rightness.

Outside of this relationship to God and the gospel, there is no freedom. There is not even choice. Choice is an illusion, because mankind is a prisoner to sin, subject to the whims of the flesh, encased in the cell of the body.

We can make a commitment to evil, and keep it, but we cannot keep our commitment to good. This is how we know that we are fallen.

Truth is just freedom from lies. Truth doesn’t grant freedom, but is the essence of freedom itself.

But there are no free choices if you are deceived. If you are misinformed, you cannot be free to make good, sound moral decisions. Therefore, freedom can only exist where no lies exist, and that certainly is not here, on earth. You can only be free after you disconnect from the world of lies.

We can make a commitment to evil, and keep it, but we cannot keep our commitment to good. This is how we know that we are fallen.

The bible says, where the spirit of the lord is, there is freedom. That is the only place you will find freedom. In the presence of the Lord, where the spirit is. Not down here on earth. Because in His presence, you will have liberation from want and lack. Christ said as much. He said that we “will ALWAYS have the poor among you.” There is no perfect world on the horizon. Its end is destruction and apocalypse.

It is our death that grants us our love for freedom. Our yearning for freedom comes from a deep desire to accumulate experience as defensive infrastructure against death. But no matter how much travel we do, or selfies we take at National Parks, we will not escape the prison of death. You cannot assemble anything against death, except good works and faith. They are the only tools we have.

Death, also, frees you completely. Liberated from want, lack, need and desire. But the problem with death is that it also frees you from yourself.

We are not even born free. We are not free beings by default. Instead we are born as bilious, blubbery, fatty, wailing nymphets. We are undressed and prone to all manner of harm. If we were all truly born free, we would all be dead.

And this brings us to rights.

I don’t know that natural rights exist except as vague metaphysical declarations. We are free to live, to die, to suffer, to resist or comply. Besides that, we are only free to be moral or immoral. We are only truly free to do good or to do evil.

Freedom itself is described as “the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action.” And that is exactly what it is. It is not a thing in itself, or a material substance. It is the absence of oppression, like darkness is the absence of light. We have freedom when we don’t have something or someone else oppressing us.

If we don’t participate in the political arena and the culture war, the godless will gather up more power and influence, and persecutions will be inevitable. We must vote. We must attend church. We must band together.

Finally, an allowance to be moral is true freedom. If you think about it, this is what the democrats are seeking to take from us, by criminalization of traditional Christian acts– feeding the homeless, filling meters, treating a person struggling with homosexuality, persuading someone not to kill their unborn baby, or of late- even attending church.

There is no doubt that American Christians have failed America. When you consider the transformative effect that one committed, passionate person can achieve, and you consider how many Christians we have in the country, it becomes clear that the great majority have dismissed their spiritual birthright. Because if one man can turn a country on its head, think of how much power millions of Christians should wield. It is clear that there is something lacking, something missing in the believing community.

They don’t even know that their only natural, God-given right is a freedom to behave morally, to take up their cross and follow Christ.

Censorship and the End of Time

  1. If I have learned anything in the last 72 hours or so, it is that this nation is doomed. We aren’t going to make it. Jesus said it best that: “a house divided against itself cannot stand.

This being the case, it is always best to have an exit plan. In the end, we are all citizens of the earth, and any land mass rising above the ocean is as good as any other.
  2. And sure, there is a lot of blame to go around. But ultimately, what I see, is that the rational and sane segment of society is keeping quiet, or has been shouted down. Extremists speak for us now. They are found with the biggest follower amounts on social media. They are interviewed on the news night after night. And the more extreme elements on the left represent the left to the majority of the right, and vice versa. There is no way this ends well.
  3. Earlier, I said, that this nation appears to be careening toward a doomsday scenario. And this may well be true. But it is interesting to note, that as Christians, we should already be aware of this end. The Bible is very much apocalyptic literature, and the prophets and the inspired authors all to a man predicted death, destruction, annihilation, and an end to this world in a great, incomparable war. They understood back then what was in man, served us an accurate and devastating diagnosis of his true condition, and warned us of what is yet to come.

As believers, we must always be awares, always be on guard for the signs. It should never come as a shock to any of us that the world is devolving into chaos. It is not like we weren’t told beforehand.
  4. Finally, on the conservative side of things, something must be done about the “alternative journalists” on the right. Their ideas and conspiracy theories are becoming more commonplace. They have one hell of a scam going. Most of them sell herbal cures and doomsday prepper products, then spend their whole show selling their products by promoting fear and hopelessness.

I don’t mean censorship. I realized the other night that Twitter and Facebook did all of us a great injustice by censoring and banning them. They now have the ability to inject their conspiratorial poisons unfiltered and without challenge. There is no feed left to post in to call out their bullshit. There are no more avenues left to rebut their ideas in. So their followers are now receiving concentrated doses of their venom, and they have upped the ante on their claims by orders of magnitude, emboldened by the lack of any skeptical presence.

We saw the result of that on the assault on the capital building. There is plenty of blame to go around, left and right.

A Word for Today.

Christians and all good people must remember that our fight isn’t against marxism, or racism, or any ism, but against powers, evil and spiritual forces. This is where many have allowed themselves to become confused.

I am just as guilty as anyone. I rail against socialism. I rail against the counterfeit morals of the world such as racism. But we should probably dig beneath the surface, to explore why people are turning to these ideologies.

I think it is because people no longer believe in the power of love, but instead believe in authority, and control. Perhaps because they cannot control themselves, they believe that everybody must be controlled fully, by government, by the state, by the sword, if necessary.

Our christian concepts have not gone away. The truth is that people still feel a deep desire for these moral ideas. All you have to do is listen to the godless, the political maniacs, the atheists and socialists. It is obvious that they do indeed believe in evil, but they just call it by another name.

For example, racism has become the new evil. We are told it is everywhere, systemic, invisible, in everyone, and we are to repent of it.

Every christian and good person can unite under the flag of a war against evil, against sin, against hatred. But when we use the world’s moral language, confusion and chaos is the result. The proof is all around us today.

The real problem with these new concepts is that they do not have a strong claim to accuracy.

For example, any moral fault that an accuser is free from is not a valid religious moral concept. Jesus said as much. We are all guilty of murder, of adultery, of hatred, he said. When a sin (racism) can only be owned by a certain race, it is not valid.

We have to be careful as believers not to promote an alternative moral dynamic to the one laid out over 2,000 years ago, not one based on humility, not one that can be solved by love, as it only exists in the mouths of accusers as a secret, dubious deposit of intent on the souls of others.

The world has abandoned evidence, reason, logic, and all good sense, it seems. They apply their slurs on their opponents without discrimination.

We need to ask ourselves why. What do they see?

They see exactly what you and I see.

They see evil, everywhere, in everyone.

But they have lost hope in love, succumbed to defeatism and nihilism, and now support fully the authority of the state to impose order on everyone.

They have lost faith, is all.

There is Something to be Said for War

They have no great war.

They were just children when 9/11 happened. They don’t remember having to crouch under your school desk during a nuclear attack drill. They didn’t have grandparents who fought in World War 2 and Vietnam to teach them the evils of leftism and socialism and communism. They didn’t have to fight a civil war, or run an underground railroad.

They played inside instead of outside, lived online, stayed home on weekends playing video games with earphones and headsets, cradling I-pods and hand-held consoles.

They have no great struggle, no bogeyman to keep them up at night. There is nothing outside the borders of this country that scares them, that puts fear into their hearts.

They don’t speak of evil, almost never speak of evil.

Instead of quoting scripture, they cite pop-psychology, they cite news articles and editorials. They utilize concepts and words that cannot be found in our bibles, our sutras, our surahs and encyclicals. They have completely abandoned a 2,000 year old inheritance of accumulated wisdom.

They will not band together to fight against evil, perhaps because they do not believe in evil.

It is hard to believe in evil when all of your life, you have been on the sidelines, living in a digital prison. Never having been tested, never having failed, sinned, apologized, made recompense. As if being good was merely doing nothing, or having opted out.

Most men who believe in evil have lived long enough to encounter evil first, within themselves.

But they do believe in oppression, systemic racism, safe spaces, phobias and privilege. They have a whole lexicon of euphemisms for evil to judge others with.

Actions and fruits no longer matter, they aren’t important. Only secret, invisible intentions matter now; only what they intuit about others, whatever assumptions and motives they can and will deposit upon others.

And because they don’t have an enemy to war against, they now war against their own.

Maybe it is time to face the fact that we are a warlike people, each generation looking for a heroic, American struggle, and if they cannot find one ready and waiting, they will fashion one, create one, cook one up as they have, out of a motley host of exotic ingredients found in old, Soviet, Marxist cookbooks.

Jesus said, that you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

But what happens when a whole generation abandons truth?

What happens when truth is viewed as meanness, as impolite conversation, or as violence and aggression?

Perhaps all that will be left will be enslavement to the shifting, subjective passions of a self-righteous mob.

If they want a war so badly, maybe they should be given a real one, or two, or three.

Maybe Dick Cheney, and his doctrine of perpetual, preemptive war, wasn’t such an idiot after all.

But the truth is–there is a war going on, but it is not what they suspect it to be. The war is not against racism, or inequality, or slavery or religion. It is not against people, not against flesh and blood. It is a spiritual war– good against evil, good against principalities, against strongholds, against spirits, and against evil.

It is the real war. And they have joined a side, maybe without even realizing it.

Therefore they do have a great war. They have chosen war against us, their own people.

Never stopping to realize that they are on the side of anarchy and destruction. Never stopping to realize, that as Jesus said: A house divided against itself cannot stand.
